Let’s be real—date nights don’t stop being important once the ring is on your finger. In fact, investing in your relationship throughout engagement and marriage is one of the most life-giving things you can do.

But that doesn’t mean you need to blow your wedding budget on weekly dinners out. In our house, most of our dates are free or under $10—and they still feel special because they’re intentional. So if you’re trying to save money and stay connected, here are some of our favorite easy at-home date night ideas for engaged couples (or married couples too!).

1. Movie Night, But Make It Extra

Okay yes, it’s a classic—but hear me out. Spice things up by watching a favorite childhood movie, or close your eyes and pick something random on Netflix. Take it next level with a DIY popcorn bar, wine and cheese spread, or even back rubs during the credits. You’re not just watching a movie, you’re making a memory.

2. Game Night for Two

Board games aren’t just for big groups! Pick up a new two-player game, or bust out a classic like Scrabble or Uno. Pour some wine, light a candle, and embrace the friendly (or not-so-friendly 👀) competition. It’s surprisingly fun how much laughter a $10 card game can bring.

3. Cook or Bake Together

Sure, one of you might accidentally become the boss of the kitchen—but hey, that’s part of the fun. Choose a new recipe and divide it up: one of you does dinner, the other tackles dessert or drinks. Bonus points for themed nights like “Taco Tuesday” or “Make Your Own Pizza” night.

4. DIY Tasting Party

Wine. Chocolate. Apple varieties. Teas. Even cereal. If you can eat it, you can taste-test it. Grab a few options from the pantry or grocery store and rate them like you’re on a cooking show. You’ll be surprised how fun (and budget-friendly) this is.

5. Backyard or Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt

Transform your regular evening walk into a playful adventure with a DIY scavenger hunt. Look for things like a porch swing, a pink flower, or a yard flamingo. Make it a competition or just see what you notice when you’re paying attention together.

6. Wine & Paint Night

Cue up a Bob Ross video, pour some wine (or sparkling juice if that’s your thing), and embrace your inner artist. Don’t have fancy art supplies? Watercolors and printer paper totally work. The point is to laugh, connect, and maybe discover some hidden talents.

7. Dream Together: Vacation or Home Project Planning

Maybe the bank account says “beans and rice” but your heart says “Italian countryside.” That’s okay. Set aside an evening to dream and plan together. Where do you want to go someday? What projects are you excited to do in your home? Then make a savings plan and start working toward it—together.

8. DIY Spa Night

Pull out the lotions, light some candles, put on soft worship music or instrumental hymns, and give each other facials or foot massages. You don’t need a fancy setup—just some coconut oil and a quiet space can work wonders. It’s intimate, relaxing, and feels way fancier than it actually is.

9. Book Night (Yes, Even if You’re Not “Readers”)

Grab a book you’re both interested in—fiction, marriage devotionals, funny memoirs—and take turns reading it out loud. You’d be surprised how bonding it is to share a story together. Bonus points for hot tea, fuzzy blankets, and reading in your best dramatic voices.

10. Power Outage Date

No, you don’t have to cut the circuit breaker 😅 but turn off all the lights and electronics for the night. Light some candles, pull out the board games or just sit and talk. There’s something so sweet about being off the grid and 100% present with each other.

11. Dance Party in the Living Room

Put on a playlist of your wedding songs (or favorite throwbacks) and just dance like no one’s watching—because no one is. Learn a slow dance or look up a silly TikTok routine and laugh your way through it. Romantic? Absolutely. Embarrassing? Also yes. Worth it? 100%.

12. “Favorite Things” Show & Tell

Take turns sharing your current favorite things: a song, a snack, a Bible verse, a funny meme. Then explain why you picked each one. It’s a fun way to get to know each other more deeply, even if you’ve been together for years. (Plus it makes for cute conversation starters at dinner.)

13. Memory Lane Night

Bust out your old photos—dating days, wedding, childhood—and relive the memories. Or pull up your old texts and scroll through those cringey first flirts. You could even create a mini scrapbook or timeline of your relationship together (print a few pics, glue stick, done!).

14. Teach Each Other Something

Everyone’s good at something. Maybe he teaches you how to do a basic budget spreadsheet (hot), and you show him how to make the perfect Pinterest-worthy charcuterie board (iconic). Take turns teaching a simple skill or hobby and see where it takes you.

15. Prayer + Planning Night

End the week or start a new one by spending 30 minutes praying together—over your marriage, goals, future family, and anything heavy on your hearts. Then use the second half of the night to plan your week, go over budgets, or sync up schedules. Faith meets function. 💒📝
